Create, edit and suspend member accounts
Where: Admin → Members → Accounts → Users
Before you start
Account roles and user-group memberships are different. The role determines the account’s administrative identity; groups add category access and display banners. Username policy applies when a username is created or changed, while an unchanged legacy name is exempt.
Step by step
- Search for the member by name or email, or choose New user.
- For a new account enter its username, email, role and password, then Create user. Nothing is emailed automatically.
- For an existing account use Edit to update display name, username, email, title, location, website, bio or signature; Save user.
- Use the row’s verified/suspension controls only after confirming the correct account.
- Use Set password for a password reset; enter and confirm it, then tell the owner through a trusted channel and ask them to change it.
Settings and behaviour
Account roles and user-group memberships are different. The role determines the account’s administrative identity; groups add category access and display banners. Username policy applies when a username is created or changed, while an unchanged legacy name is exempt.
“Notifications off for this account” is for bot/shared accounts that act but do not read notifications. Ban by email/IP can suspend multiple matching accounts; the operation exempts your own account and other administrators. Verify the target scope before using a shared address or network. Do not share a temporary password in a public topic.
Check the result
Use a separate ordinary test account to verify profile updates and suspension effects. Confirm no unrelated accounts were changed.
Common questions and troubleshooting
Cannot save a renamed account: check username length policy and uniqueness. No notification list for a bot: review its notifications-off setting. Groups did not change with a role edit: manage memberships separately.
