Preserve read-only member access in the core beta forum
Where: Admin → Members → Users → Beta access
Before you start
The core feature remains present in beta.156e. The Beta Access Pro beta.2 addon is a separate preview with core_removal_ready=false; do not remove the core as part of this documentation update. Tester membership adds to existing memberships, so a moderator retains their role.
Step by step
- Use Set up beta access, or select an existing Beta category and Use this category.
- Assign approved members the Beta Tester status; keep their other groups.
- Inspect Groups & permissions → Category access: Registered Can view; Beta Testers Full access.
- If core setup’s rule-drift warning appears, review changes before Apply the beta access rules again.
- Test ordinary member reading without posting/replying, tester posting/replying and guest denial.
Settings and behaviour

Check the result
Use actual ordinary-member and tester sessions; staff bypasses can conceal an incorrect rule.
Common questions and troubleshooting
Tester can read but not post: check the mapped beta category, group membership, category level and board capabilities. Ordinary member posts: look for another additive group grant.
