Configure downloads, review and upload limits

Where: Admin → Downloads → Download settings

Before you start

These are library-wide defaults; group/member submission overrides can change the effective answer for an account. An upload must fit every layer: addon/core setting, PHP upload_max_filesize, PHP post_max_size and the proxy/web-server request cap. Each picture limit defaults to 10 MB in this release, but its effective value can be smaller. A gallery’s combined request must fit post_max_size.

Step by step

  1. Choose library presentation and submission defaults in each section.
  2. Set who may submit and whether submissions need staff approval.
  3. Set allowed file types and file/image size limits to fit the hosting limits.
  4. Review file-storage settings and the runtime limits printed by the page.
  5. Save changes, then test an allowed upload and an intentionally disallowed type/oversized file with an ordinary member.

Settings and behaviour

Downloads area

The name and tagline shown on the downloads index. Nothing here assumes a marketplace — a board that only shares ordinary files uses the same settings. Control What to enter / effect
Section name Shown as the index heading and in the submission form. Initial default: Downloads.
Tagline Initial default: Resources shared by the community..
Who can submit resources Who may post to the Downloads area. A group or an individual member can be given their own rule in Members → Submission permissions. Choices: Everyone; Registered members; Staff only. Initial default: member.
Require staff approval before a submission goes live Off means a member's listing is published as soon as it is submitted; edits and new versions follow the same rule. Initial default: 0.
Downloads per page How many resources the Downloads index (and the Marketplace listing where the Downloads setting applies) shows on one page. Between 1 and 200; default 50. The list is really paginated on the server, so every listing stays reachable. Initial default: 50.

Featured slider

The strip of featured listings above the Downloads index (and the Marketplace's own featured strip). It steps one card at a time — the cards repeat so there is no rewind — rests for the pause below, then steps again, with its scrollbar hidden. A visitor can pause it, step it with the arrows, and it holds still while the pointer or the keyboard focus is over it. Control What to enter / effect
Pause between cards (seconds) The shelf slides one card across, rests for this many seconds, then slides the next. Default 1. 0 turns the automatic stepping off and leaves the arrows and the drag. Initial default: 1.

Who can download

Control What to enter / effect
Guests can download Initial default: 0.
Registered members can download Initial default: 1.

Download limits

How many files each kind of visitor may take, and over what period. A limit of 0 means none at all. Control What to enter / effect
Guest Initial default: 0.
Guest period Choices: per day; per week; per month. Initial default: day.
Member Initial default: 5.
Member period Choices: per day; per week; per month. Initial default: day.
Subscribed member Initial default: 20.
Subscribed member period Choices: per day; per week; per month. Initial default: month.

Allowed file extensions

Comma-separated extensions, without dots. These rules are enforced when the upload is published, and a file that fails is refused before it is written — so nothing lands in uploads/ that the board will not list. Control What to enter / effect
Download files Extensions allowed for resource versions, including executable files such as .exe. Leave it empty to accept any file. Initial default: zip,rar,7z,tar,xml.
Post attachments Extensions allowed in forum post attachments. Initial default: png, jpg, jpeg, gif, webp, pdf, txt, zip, avif.
Largest upload (MB) Initial default: 64.

Image upload limits

How large a listing's own pictures may be. Each defaults to 10 MB. The effective limit is the smallest of these, PHP's own upload_max_filesize and post_max_size, and any limit the web server sets in front of PHP. This runtime reports upload_max_filesize=0 and post_max_size=0, read from the SAPI serving this page — not from the command line, which often differs. If a large upload fails instantly with no PHP error shown, the web server or a reverse proxy is refusing it before PHP runs: raise its request-body limit (client_max_body_size in nginx, or the equivalent in a hosting panel's domain container). Control What to enter / effect
Resource icon (MB) The square mark beside a listing. Effective now: host-dependent. Initial default: 10.
Cover image (MB) The wide picture at the top of a listing. Effective now: host-dependent. Initial default: 10.
Each screenshot (MB) One image in the gallery under the cover. A whole gallery has to fit in one request, so post_max_size caps the set. Effective now: host-dependent. Initial default: 10.

Check the result

Verify both desktop/mobile artwork, file download and approval behaviour. Keep rejected test content out of the public catalogue.

Common questions and troubleshooting

Large file rejected despite a larger app setting: ask the host to adjust the domain’s PHP/proxy limits; the application cannot override a smaller upstream ceiling. Preset extension rejected: confirm exact allowed types and actual file contents.
