Where: Admin → System → Communications → Chat
Before you start
A chat mute stops sending; a ban can match username, email or IP and may identify the matching account. Leave mute duration blank for an indefinite mute. Temporary mutes expire. Staff-only rooms are separate from global chat availability and member group Chat capability.
Step by step
- Create a room with name/description; choose Staff only for private staff rooms.
- Set primary/accent colours and maximum message length; Save settings.
- Write Chat rules and Save rules.
- For misconduct add a username/email/IP ban, or mute a member with optional minutes.
- Review the last fifty messages; remove offending content, Lift a ban/mute when appropriate.

Check the result
Test a normal room and staff room with staff/member/guest sessions. Confirm muted users cannot send.
Common questions and troubleshooting
Chat offline: check Features and chat enablement. Member reads but cannot send: inspect mute/ban, group Chat permission and rate/length limits. No room: create one before expecting a message feed.
